The unemployment rate in Cape Breton increased by 0.6 per cent from December where it stood at 13.7 per cent.

NutraBlend Foods announced just over a week ago that it would close its facility at 150 Adams Blvd.by the end of February, resulting in the loss of about 100 jobs.

Economists had been expecting a gain for the month of about 9,000 to 10,000 jobs, so the figures that came out were surprising.

"We also need to watch to see if our community is affected by the loss of part-time work like elsewhere in Ontario". "But the details also looking wonky, with all of the job losses in part-time work".

Sudbury's poor job performance in recent months is likely related to some extent on the fact Vale closed Coleman Mine in November to fix a ventilation compartment.

The unemployment rate in Medicine Hat has once again gone up. A strong labour market, like the one Canada has seen in recent months, generally invites more people to rejoin the labour force and apply for jobs.

That trend was reflected nationally, with Canada adding 49,000 full-time jobs compared with the 137,000 part-time jobs that were lost that month.

"Market participants are getting schooled in the ways of Canada's employment numbers, and the lesson seems to be that when they're too good to be true, they might not be", CIBC chief economist Avery Shenfeld said in a note. By region, the agency said Ontario and Quebec saw the biggest decreases last month, while New Brunswick and Manitoba also had net losses.

Employment in Canada as of January 2018.

While that is lower than the national number, the dollar amount of $27.83 in Ontario is higher than for all of Canada at $27.46 for January, said Gordon Song, an analyst with Statistics Canada, in an email.

BMO chief economist Douglas Porter also cautioned against "drawing a straight line from the [wage] hike to one month's job move", noting in a research note that harsh weather in January appeared to have hit employment in the province's construction sector (down 14,900 jobs) and transportation industry (down 5,900 jobs).

Unemployment in Canada is at 5.9 per cent, 3.9 per cent in Victoria and 4.8 per cent in Nanaimo. "Even prior to this week's financial market gyrations and this weak jobs data, we were of the view that the [Bank of Canada] would wait until the second half of the year before hiking [interest rates] again - these developments only embolden that view", Porter wrote in a commentary.
