Microsoft is turning Progressive Web Apps into Windows apps

  • The Microsoft Surface Laptop released in 2017 was the first Windows 10 S PC

Further, it already reviewed almost 1.5 million candidates through which a "small initial set" of PWAs have been identified that will be indexed for Windows 10 users to test the experience over the coming weeks.

Tune into the keynote by Kevin Gallo, Vice President of the Windows Developer Platform, and live Q&A session to be the first to hear about the newest features and updates.

Progressive Web Apps will be supported in Windows 10 and across all major browsers, and will offer a simpler way of developing cross-platform apps that work very similarly to native software.

Microsoft is planning on bringing Progressive Web Apps to Windows 10 and Edge browser.

Microsoft also made a few Windows Subsystem for Linux updates in 17093, including the ability to make WSL more configurable using wsl.conf and the ability to communicate between WSL and Windows applications over Unix sockets. Now, the company is enlisting Windows 10 S users to the cause. Microsoft has also given Windows 10's experimental eye control capabilities a boost.

The company said their Bing Crawler has been working for nearly a year to find quality PWAs on the web which will populate the Store in the coming weeks.

The addition of PWAs comes at a time when Microsoft is preparing to elevate the importance of the Store, with Microsoft recently announcing that PC makers would be given greater scope to sell PCs that are locked to using Store apps only by default.

If you use Android, you might have come across a Progressive Web App or two in your Chrome journeys.

PWAs for short, these are websites or web apps specially crafted to deliver native app-like experience irrespective of the device platform and form factor.

As well as discovering apps via web crawling, developers will also be able to submit their offerings directly to Microsoft for approval.

Unlike Electron apps, such as Microsoft's own Visual Studio Code, PWAs can't include native OS-dependent code. And there's a new "clutter-free printing" option in the print dialog for Microsoft Edge. However, there are plans to enable Service Worker and various technologies to enable features such as push notifications through PWAs with the release of EdgeHTML17 on stable Windows 10 builds in the coming future.
