America Warns About the Expanding nuclear capabilities in Pyongyang

Last April, Kim marked the birthday of his grandfather, Kim Il Sung, with a huge procession that, among other things, featured an eight-wheeled launch vehicle bigger than anything seen on the parade route before, along with missile canisters large enough to carry two-stage intercontinental ballistic missiles - the kind with the range to hit the continental United States. The initial report said $1.2 trillion would be needed to upgrade and modernize America's nuclear arsenal. "Stressing the role of nuclear weapons is not merely unhelpful but is likely to increase these tensions".

"I've been no fan of the tweets, the policy by tweets", Rice said.

Robert Wood, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament, who was especially vocal at the conference, called North Korea's peaceful actions before the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, nothing more than an act, stressing that the situation on the Korean Peninsula remains as volatile as ever.

China responded to this with a pledge that it will never be first to use nuclear weapons "under any circumstances".

This would see military headquarters and key infrastructure destroyed by United States bombers and missiles, with the intention of neutralising Kim and staving off all-out war.

"Increasing the number and the possible role of (smaller) tactical nuclear weapons is a recipe for a disaster", they declare, adding: "Tactical nuclear weapons can make nuclear war more likely through de-facto lowering the threshold between a conventional and a nuclear conflict". Now is the time for the U.S., Russian Federation and China to take honest steps toward nuclear arms reduction.

Wood's dire warning comes about two weeks after Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo made a similar prediction - telling CBS that "North Korea's nuclear weapons program is continuing to expand, advance, become more powerful, more capable, more reliable". Iraq, Iran and North Korea were portrayed in the speech as building nuclear weapons, a claim Bush later used to partly justify the US invasion of Iraq the following year. All this, happening in Geneva Tuesday at a UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament.

However, on the other hand, it is equally possible that other states would follow into the USA footsteps and consider using their nuclear warheads, the researcher assumed, warning that this could lead to nothing short of a new arms race.

Pugwash's mission is to bring scientific insight and reason to bear on namely, the catastrophic threat posed to humanity by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.

The new United States nuclear doctrine makes it clear that Washington will no longer restrain its nuclear capability, Hirofumi Tosaki, а fellow of the Center for the Promotion of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA), told Sputnik Japan. He believes that the US" new "low-yield' tactical atomic weapons could become a response to Pyongyang's nuclear program.
