Sources told Reuters on Monday that former chief strategist Steve Bannon would not testify before the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, despite a subpoena requesting his presence.

Bannon left the White House in August.

Conway's office said the committee itself - which is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election - had chose to delay the interview with Bannon. "We look forward to having him before the Committee once we can assure that he will be able to thoroughly answer all our questions without concerns regarding the scope of executive privilege".

The attack comes as Schiff (D-Burbank), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, continues his efforts to rebut Republican criticism of the investigation into Trump's associates and their possible ties to Russian meddling in the 2016 election. He has, however, agreed to answer all of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's questions for the investigation.

Bannon, a former campaign chief for President Trump, is ditching the House Intelligence Committee hearing because the White House and the panel have yet to reach a deal over the range of the questioning, CNN reported.

Mr. Bannon is reportedly cooperating with the Mueller probe and will be interviewed by the special counsel's team next week, according to a CNBC report Tuesday.

Rooney recalled that Bannon, during his appearance in the House last month, suggested that executive privilege might cover his time on the transition before Trump formally took office.

Sources told Fox News at the time that Bannon did not specifically invoke any sort of legal privilege, including executive privilege, to support his refusal to answer questions. That meeting took place between members of Trump's campaign team and a Russian lawyer who had promised Donald Trump, Jr. compromising information on 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

"But again, I expect him to be here, expect him to answer the questions, and [we'll] go from there", Conaway said.
