The policy effectively ends efforts under the administration of former President Barack Obama to reduce the size and scope of the USA arsenal and minimize the role of nuclear weapons in defense planning, outlining the Pentagon's nuclear ambitions under President Donald Trump.

Gabriel called for "existing arms control treaties to be upheld unconditionally".

Friday's report endorsed adhering to US arms control agreements, including the New START treaty that limits the United States and Russian Federation each to 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads on a maximum of 700 deployed launchers.

Rouhani argued the policy is a hypocritical approach coming from a country that has repeatedly warned Tehran about the destructiveness of such powerful weapons.

The U.S. government says it has been in compliance since August and expects Moscow to comply by the deadline, which is Monday.

The US military has put countering China and Russian Federation at the centre of a new national defence strategy unveiled earlier this month, shifting priorities away from fighting Islamist militants.

The Trump nuclear doctrine breaks with Obama's in ending his push to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in US defense policy.

Low-yield weapons are smaller, less powerful bombs with a strength below 20 kilotonnes. Taking a dig at the USA, the Iranian president also said that the United States speaks of peace while threatening other nations with nuclear weapons.

The document said the United States will develop for deployment a "low-yield" nuclear warhead for submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

The Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nevada (SSBN 733) transits the Hood Canal as the boat returns to its homeport at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor following a strategic deterrent patrol.

His comments came after the Defense Department on Friday unveiled a new Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), its first in eight years, which calls for developing smaller nukes in a bid to counter Russian Federation.

Robert Soofer, a senior nuclear policy official at the Pentagon who helped direct the policy review, said Moscow is likely to push back on the US plan for fielding those two additional weapons.

Russia, Iran, and China have strongly criticized Washington's newly revealed policy plan to expand US nuclear weapons capabilities in order to deter other countries.

The US is "shamelessly threatening Russian Federation with an atomic weapon", according to Iran's President Hassan Rouhani.
