PARIS (AP) - is ultimately to blame for any use of chemical weapons in Syria, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Tuesday amid reports of a suspected chemical attack this week near the capital, Damascus.
"We have other reports from the battlefield from people who claim it's been used", Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon.
The United States frequently accuses the Syrian government of developing and using chemical weapons in order to "justify its illegal and criminal acts" in the war-ravaged country, says an American analyst.
In April previous year, the USA struck a military base in central Syria with more than 50 Tomahawk missiles, in retaliation for an alleged chemical attack by the government forces on a rebel-held town in the northwestern province of Idlib.
President Donald Trump has not ruled out additional military action to deter attacks or punish Assad, administration officials said, although they did not suggest any action was imminent.
"We are even more concerned about the possibility of sarin use, (but) I don't have the evidence,"Mattis said".
The attack comes a day after Syria's former al-Qaeda affiliate claimed responsibility for the downing of a Russian warplane as it flew low over Saraqeb in northern Syria, apparently using a surface-to-air missile.
However, another official said that the Trump administration hopes that stepped-up worldwide sanctions and diplomatic pressure against Damascus will help rein in Syria's chemical weapons program. Mattis hinted at such action on Friday, referencing a US missile strike on a Syrian military airfield past year. In the past two years, a joint United Nations and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) inquiry found the Syrian government used the nerve agent sarin and several times used chlorine as a weapon.
That agreement came after accusations that Damascus used sarin gas on Eastern Ghouta in August 2013.
