After court blow to regime, clashes erupt in Maldives

  • Nasheed vows to challenge Maldives president in polls

The court ordered the immediate release and retrial of the exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed and other opposition leaders. "We believe Yameen might threaten the sitting bench with arrest if they don't revert the decision, " said Naseem. Western countries including USA and United Kingdom have already welcomed the verdict while India has hoped that the ruling will be abided in spirit of democracy.

After the court ruling, Nasheed has declared that he can and will contest the elections which should take place this year.

"We must set up proper procedures for inclusive, free and fair elections with full worldwide observation".

Earlier, Opposition parties had appealed to the global community including the UN, EU, and India to impress upon the Maldives Government to respect the Supreme Court ruling. The latest ruling reaffirms the fundamentals of the separation of powers.

It ordered the re-reinstatement of the 12 members who had been stripped of their seats for "defecting". This has given the opposition a clear majority in Parliament and that's the reason the opposition believes Yameen can no longer remain in power.

The Supreme Court ruling also stated that political pressure was put on the prosecutors and the courts during the trials, the MDP claimed.

Gayoom's spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali on Friday tweeted that the "talk was all false and that the picture of a ticket being spread in the social media, purportedly belong to President Yameen, was falsified".

Opposition parties had already brought an impeachment motion against speaker which is pending. The opposition also alleged that many employees of government-affiliated companies were forced to come out on the streets on Saturday in support of Yameen for their "fear of unemployment".

Shortly after Thursday's ruling the police announced on Twitter that it would enforce it.

The president's office later said it accepted the ruling and would comply with it. Attorney General Mohamed Anil said Areef was sacked because Yameen was repeatedly unable to reach him on the phone.

The Maldives ' popular image as an upmarket holiday paradise has been severely damaged by a major crackdown on dissent under Yameen, who has overseen the jailing of nearly all the political opposition.
