Russia's foreign spy chief, who is under USA sanctions, met last week outside Washington with US intelligence officials, two USA sources said, confirming a disclosure that intensified political infighting over probes into Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 USA election.

Naryshkin is among the senior Russian defense and intelligence officials who had previously been sanctioned by the Obama administration in 2014 in retaliation for Russian's invasion of Ukraine.

The meeting raised eyebrows for three reasons: It was announced by Russia's ambassador and reported on by the Soviet news agency TASS before it was reported by anyone in the usa; the main attendee was supposed to be barred from the country; and current and former us intelligence officials told the Post they can't remember so many Russian spy and security officials meeting with U.S.at once.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo met with Russian intelligence officials last week. He released a letter early Thursday demanding that Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats disclose details of the meeting by February 9.

"Politics is politics, but work is work", he said. "We vigorously defend America in this enters and pull no punches - we never will".

A spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

The Central Intelligence Agency director visited Moscow to meet Russian officials previous year.

Pompeo's reply to Schumer failed to satisfy the senator. "If raised, what was his response?"

Antonov did not identify the USA intelligence officials with whom he met. Russian Federation denies it meddled and Trump dismissed the allegations of collusion as a political witch hunt. Naryshkin has been under sanctions and has required a waiver to visit the USA since 2014.

The meeting, which addressed the countries' mutual interest in preventing terrorist attacks, took place amid high tensions between Russian Federation and the United States over a Kremlin-directed campaign to interfere with the 2016 elections.

Naryshkin met with DNI Coats at Coats's suburban Washington headquarters, according to two sources.

It wasn't clear whom Korobov may have met with. The names of Bortnikov and Naryshkin are mentioned in the list of high-ranking and influential Russians, published on December 29 and compiled by the US Treasury Department in the framework of the so-called Kremlin Report.

The Trump administration let a top Russian spy official visit the United States last week for meetings with the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) even though there are sanctions against the Russian that prohibit such visits.

A senior US intelligence official based in Moscow was also called back to Washington for the meeting with the CIA chief, said a person familiar with the events, who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive meeting. The memo is a flashpoint in a wider battle between Republicans and Democrats over Special Counsel Robert Mueller's criminal investigation into potential collusion.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo told the BBC in an interview last weekend that he had not "seen a significant decrease" in Russian attempts at subversion in Europe and the United States, and he expects Moscow to meddle in November's us mid-term elections.
