  • Trump's Top 10 Quotes from the State of the Union [SLIDESHOW]

After all, the same segment of the American population that was willing to pick an utterly incompetent, blustering demagogue to run the country has placed little faith in actual facts. Optimism is rising and the economy continues to improve, but not for all people.

Sanders confirmed after the speech that he was indeed less than impressed, pointing out that Trump did not mention climate change or college debt once and criticising his plan to privatise United States infrastructure, clamp down on legal immigration including the Dreamers, among other policies. Most Democratic governors have joined the U.S. Climate Alliance to push back on the Paris decision, but Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf has held out.

Trump faces a series of policy choices in the next few weeks and months that will show whether he is honest in his pledge to "seek out common ground" and could also shape his presidency and legacy.

However, some experts weren't so sure about Trump's claims.

My duty, and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber, is to defend Americans-to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream. Because Americans are dreamers too.

Trump then outlined the four pillars of his immigration reform.

Despite calls for unity, Trump drew a line in the sand and made clear where he stands on the issue with a not-so-subtle nod to his nativist base.

Trump began his discussion of immigration by pointing out the parents of two teenage girls who were killed by members of the MS-13 gang.

"There's many, many infrastructure projects that are not going to be privately funded", he said. By this logic, the only people who could ever be let into the country are ones that can be predictably guaranteed to never commit crimes-an impossible bar. Do legal immigrants and their spouses and kids really need protection from the immediate relatives they would be sponsoring? "A single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives", said Trump, addressing his Republican allies in Congress and his ardent anti-immigrant supporters watching at home. And if you think those other things will happen under a GOP Congress, I have a Trump Steak to sell you. He openly challenged foreign governments and hinted at continued US involvement in armed conflicts. Trump says he's "100 percent" behind this defamation of the nation's premier law enforcement agency for political purposes. The US has "new rules of engagement", he said, and it will not be "undermined by artificial timelines".

We know the president is capable of such behavior, we saw him do it when he hosted a bipartisan White House meeting of House and Senate leaders on immigration on January 17.

A major disconnect remains between Trump's words and actions while in office, particuarly when it comes to the promise of lowering drug prices, said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.

In short, Trump invoked a series of terrifying enemies ready to attack Americans and countered that narrative with multiple noble "heroes" throughout his speech who, like him, were protecting God-fearing, law-abiding American citizens.

Typically, though, the president uses that platform to remind us of the strength of our democracy, the courage of our servicemen and women, the positive impact of policies their administration has put in place, and our need to remain vigilant against those that want to curb our freedom or spread the evils of their regimes where we don't want them to.

Unlike his usual "unscripted conversational style, with simple, concrete, straightforward vocabulary and syntax", Tuesday's speech "contained more complex grammatical structures and more abstract and metaphoric language," Sclafani said.
