A premiere date for the final "House of Cards" season hasn't been announced yet.

The big news is that Oscar nominees Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear will join the series; they'll be playing siblings, but other details are being kept under wraps.

Netflix last month said it took a $US39 million write down for unreleased programming, stemming from Spacey's sexual misconduct scandal.

For more on House of Cards, read IGN's review of Season 5. Its content chief Ted Sarandos had promised that Netflix would resume House of Cards production in early 2018.

ET can confirm that the Netflix series has cast Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear for the upcoming sixth and final season of the series.

Cards shut down October 31 after about two weeks of production near Baltimore, and it was initially unclear whether the show would be scrapped entirely.

Lane is best known for role in 2002 film Unfaithful, which was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

Considering Spacey has undoubtedly been, along with Wright, the defining crutch of the show, it'll be interesting to see how his absence will be tackled in the final season.

Storylines for the show have been re-written to remove Spacey from the show entirely.

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos confirmed in December that House of Cards would return without Spacey and his Frank Underwood character to "bring closure of the show for fans". The streaming giant also shortened the length of the season from 13 episodes to 8 episodes.

The sixth season will be shorter than its predecessors, comprising of eight episodes.

House of Cards Season 6 picks up (spoiler alert) with star Robin Wright's Claire Underwood in the Oval Office, a result of the previous season's political machinations.
