Musicians pay tribute to Las Vegas shooting victims at Grammys

  • At the Grammy Awards Maren Morris and Eric Church performed a tribute to those killed in the Las Vegas massacre

All three acts had participated in the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas previous year, when a gunman opened fire on concertgoers, killing 58 people and injuring more than 850 others. Morris along with Eric Church and the Brothers Osborne sang a rendition of Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven".

Following the announcement of Chris Stapleton as the victor of Best Country Album, things took a somber turn at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

Eric told the crowd: "On October 1st, all of country music was reminded in the most tragic way, the connection we share with our fans and the healing power music will always provide".

Clapton wrote the song after the death of his son, and his recording won Record, Song and Best Pop Vocal Performance Male at the Grammy Awards in 1993.

The wrenching, touching atmosphere of the performance was amplified by the simple stage setup, which featured the names of those who died written in different handwriting, and projected on yellow-orange light squares. The touching tribute was handled tenderly between singer TJ Osborne's soulful baritone, Morris' Texas twang and Church's forceful singing, although a bad microphone made much of Morris' intro before the song unintelligible. "The painful truth is that this year in just those two events, 81 music lovers, just like us, went out to a night of music and never came home", she said through some audio technical difficulties. "Although that usually means a focus on achievement and excellence, sadly, a year ago was marred by a number of senseless tragedies that took place at live music events".

On May 22 a year ago, 23 people were killed and over 500 were injured at a Ariana Grande concert in Manchester when an Islamist terrorist detonated a homemade bomb. 58 people were killed as a gunman opened fire on unsuspecting fans.
