  • ATM 'Jackpotting' Attacks Have Found Their Way To The US

For the first time on record, ATMs located in the United States are falling prey to jackpotting, an attack in which malicious hardware or software forces the machines to dispense huge amounts of cash to waiting thieves, KrebsOnSecurity reported over the weekend.

Withdrawals were subsequently frozen at over 1,000 ATMs at that time, a police investigation that followed revealed that masked thieves were waiting in front of machines that were hacked and carried away bags full of cash that equaled over $2 million in all.

Cybercriminals are hacking cash machines to force them to give out money in what is known as "jackpotting", according to two of the world's largest ATM makers and the US Secret Service.

In a demonstration video released by the MIT Technology Review shows how the money is cleared out quickly, typically dispensing around 40 bills in about 20 seconds.

Reuters was unable to obtain a copy of the Secret Service report and an agency representative declined comment.

Diebold Nixdorf said that authorities had warned the company that hackers were targeting its Opteva ATM model, which went out of production several years ago.

The Secret Service says authorities have recently obtained credible information about planned jackpotting attacks in the US and have alerted law enforcement and financial institutions. "This represents the first confirmed cases of losses due to logical attacks in the US".

NCR and Diebold Nixdorf sent out alerts to clients warning of the trend on Saturday. "This should be treated by all ATM deployers as a call to action", NCR warns.

Ploutus.D, first spotted in Mexico back in 2013, interacts with ATM operating systems used by manufacturer Diebold Nixdorf - but a few tweaks expand the malware's reach beyond this vendor.

According to the Secret Service, the suspects have been targeting ATMs in the Pacific Northwest, the West, South and, most recently, New England. Similar attacks were also reported in Thailand and Taiwan.
