Anger grows in Kabul after ambulance bomb carnage

The Afghan government declared a national day of mourning after an ambulance packed with explosives blew up in a crowded street in the capital of Kabul, killing 103 people.

All countries who support peace in Afghanistan have an obligation to take decisive action to stop the Taliban's campaign of violence. "He passed through the first checkpoint saying he was taking a patient to Jamuriate hospital and at the second checkpoint he was recognised and blew his explosive-laden auto", interior ministry deputy spokesman Nasrat Rahimi told the agency.

"I condemn the despicable vehicle bombing attack in Kabul today that has left scores of innocent civilians dead and hundreds injured", the president said in a White House statement Saturday.

The explosion came around lunchtime, a particularly busy time for a street that houses government offices and leads to some worldwide embassies, the New York Times reported.

According to Reuters, the explosions began at around 5 am (local time) and lasted for at least an hour, a witness said.

"The Taleban's cruelty will not prevail", he added.

The latest attacks come about a week after an assault on the Intercontinental Hotel in the city that killed at least 25 people.

Trump has committed to stepping up the US military's engagement in Afghanistan, pledging thousands more USA troops without setting deadlines.

Five soldiers were killed and 10 wounded, officials said. A spokesperson for the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility.

It is the fourth large attack in Kabul in only a month and comes just two days after a massive Taliban bombing in central Kabul killed more than 100 people and injured 235 others.

"We believe that there is significant evidence that leadership of the Haqqani Network resides inside Pakistan and is able to plan and execute from Pakistan attacks inside Afghanistan", a senior state department official told journalists in a briefing.
