President Donald Trump has told a British television show that he didn't know a far-right group in the country was run by "horrible, racist people" when he retweeted their messages last November.

When Morgan pressed for an apology, or for Trump to express regret, the US president replied: "It was done because I am a big believer in fighting radical Islamic terror". "If you're telling me they're terrible people, frightful racist people I would certainly apologize if you would like me to do that". Asked by Morgan whether he cared if British people disagreed with his views, Trump said: "I don't care. But you're telling me about these people because I know nothing about these people".

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: In his first global interview since becoming United States president, @realDonaldTrump says sorry for retweeting anti-Muslim videos.

The videos showed alleged violent acts carried out by Muslims, including one of a boy on crutches being beaten by a man purported to be a "Muslim migrant". Trump's apology also included the standard shirking of actual responsibility that has become a hallmark of his presidency. "And so you're asking me a question that I'm supposed to be talking about people that I know nothing about".

Trump responded, "They are, but this was - I didn't do it".

". I didn't do it, I didn't go out, I did a retweet".

Friday's interview was conducted while Trump was attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and he took the opportunity praise his relations with Britain and May.

Morgan described the group, which presents itself as a political party but is widely seen as an extremist group targeting Muslims, as "racist".

Speaking to British broadcaster ITV, Trump said he "knew nothing" about the group and didn't want to be involved with them.

Trump's retweets were leading several major British news websites Wednesday morning, and officials condemned him on Twitter. "Perhaps it was a big story in Britain, perhaps it was a big story in the UK, but in the United States it wasn't a big story".

"Just so you understand, I don't know anything about David Duke, okay?"

Many in Britain felt that Trump was nearly gloating over terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.
