Nanga Parbat, known to climbers as "Killer Mountain", is one of the most unsafe peaks to climb in the world. "It is a very complex rescue operation", he said.

Poor weather prevented the team from reaching Mackiewicz, who had snow blindness and altitude sickness, Karrar Haidri, a top official in the Pakistan Alpine Federation, said Sunday.

Two alpinists who went missing while attempting to climb Pakistan's second-highest mountain Nanga Parbat have been spotted and a rescue mission is to be launched on Saturday, sources said.

Elisabeth Revol, who has frostbite on her feet and can not walk, was brought on Sunday from Skardu to Islamabad where she was admitted to Shifa International Hospital, said Haidri.

Pakistani climber Karim Shah said the rescue effort was unique in the history of mountaineering, with the team climbing 1,200m in complete darkness along a treacherous route without a fixed rope.

"The rescue of Tomasz is unfortunately not possible - because of the weather and altitude it would put the life of the rescuers in extreme danger", wrote Ludovic Giambiasi, Revol's fellow climber and trainer who posted regular updates on Facebook. "It's a bad and painful decision", he wrote.

"No one did such a climb before", Mr Shah said. Any extra money raised will now go to Mackiewicz's family.

The mountain was first summited in the winter in February 2016 by Italian alpinst Simone Moro and his team - Alex Txikon of Spain and Pakistani climber Ali Sadpara - who overcame frostbite and pummelling winds to reach the peak.

At least 68 climbers have died on the icy slopes of the world's ninth highest mountain, which stands 8,126 metres (26,600 ft.) tall.

Pakistan rivals Nepal for the number of peaks over 7,000 metres (23,000 feet) and is considered a climbers' paradise, but fatalities are also common.

Iqbal Hussain, the head of the tourism department for Pakistan's Gilgit region, where Nanga Parbat is located, told Reuters that the rescue operation would begin on Saturday.

And yet, deaths continue to occur: in June 2017, a Spanish and Argentine climbing duo were killed on the mountain after being carried away by an avalanche.

No further information is available for Tomasz Mackiewicz, a Polish climber who accompanied Revol on the Nanga Parbat climb.
