  • Kathleen Wynne Rules Out Snap Election After Patrick Brown Resignation

Brown was a Conservative backbencher under Prime Minister Stephen Harper from 2006 to 2015, when he stepped down to run for leader of the Ontario PC party.

At a Thursday news conference, the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party's deputy leaders were unequivocal: They had no idea that the allegations of sexual misconduct against their former leader were coming.

"We have to talk about health care".

"We think we've got a good base to work from", he said, adding mail-in ballots or online voting could be used to expedite things.

"My thoughts are with the courageous young women who have spoken out to describe awful, degrading and unsafe experiences they say happened at the hands of Patrick Brown", Horwath wrote. Thankfully the decision is not theirs to make.

Velshi's memo pointed out that five other junior positions - in the leader's office and at the party - have been eliminated.

CTV News reported Wednesday two women came forward with graphic allegations of sexual misconduct against Brown, dating back to when he was a federal MP.

McDonell called Brown "a very hard worker" who's done a lot for the party program and platform.

Brown, who has denied the allegations from the two women, was not at the meeting.

"Our party is stronger when all of our members across the province have their voices heard about who will lead us into the next election", she said in a statement on Twitter.

"(It's) always shocking to find women, in this day in age, continue to experience harassment", she said, noting the spate of recent allegations in Canadian politics and beyond indicate the problem is not limited to any particular field of public life or area of the economy. The broadcaster did not name the women, who alleged the incidents occurred at Brown's home in Barrie after they had been drinking in his presence. No charges have been laid.

"Mr. Brown is entitled to a legal defense and due process, but he can not lead us into an election as a result of these allegations", the statement read.

"There's absolutely no excuse for sexual misconduct and sexual violence and harassment, and people need to be safe and feel that they can be safe".

"Everyone has the right to be free from unwelcome behaviour or advances".

"I do not and will not tolerate abuse or harassment, and I will do everything in my power to fight against it".

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath voiced her support for the women who came forward, during a media availability at Queen's Park on Thursday morning. "I commend anybody who feels victimized to come forward, or who has come forward, and I would encourage anybody who feels victimized to come forward and bring those allegations forward". Politics is no different than the arts, sports, media, the corporate world or any other sector of society where these awful incidents of sexual misconduct have been reported.

Current federal party leader Andrew Scheer said the allegations against Brown must be investigated fully.

"We'll still be talking about the Green Energy Act, investing more into mental health, child care and tax cuts".

MacLeod said she had gone to Soudas instead, because he was a friend and she did not trust members of Brown's staff.

"Definitely, it will be discussed".
