Federer, bidding for a sixth Melbourne title, is into his seventh Australian Open final while US Open victor Cilic is the first Croatian male or female player to reach the showpiece encounter.

Swiss star Roger Federer has won the Australian Open for the second time in a row.

The Australian Open mens tournament has featured the likes of Kyle Edmund and Chung Hyeon, but it looks very likely that we will have the most familiar name of all winning the trophy on Sunday.

A fit and healthy Federer chalking up yet another major title coincided with his long-time rivals, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray, beginning the year with injury concerns. If the Swiss is great outdoors, he is the master indoors, suffocating opponents with his pace of play. This will be the Croatian's third Grand Slam final and the match itself is a repeat of last year's Wimbledon final. "It would be fantastic", the phenomenal Swiss said when asked what it would mean to join Margaret Court (24), Serena Williams (23) and Steffi Graf (22) in the exclusive 20s club.

"It would be unbelievable", said the Swiss. It just doesn't come around very easily.

On the face of it, Federer is an overwhelming favourite against a man he has beaten eight of nine times.

The match was Federer's 30th Grand Slam final.

On this basis, perhaps the best angle is just to watch the match as a neutral - if it's half the spectacle of the ladies final on Saturday it will be well worth your time anyway - and look to see if trading entry points manifest themselves during the match. "I can play better and better in the future".

"But looking overall, I'm really pleased with the performance". I mean, it was on me that I couldn't give my best in Wimbledon. "He crushed me in the US Open". After the fourth set, it felt like perhaps the tide had turned, but it wasn't to be for Cilic.

"I'm playing much, much more aggressive".

Cilic arrives in the final second in the aces standings on 107, second for forehand winners with 125 and second for backhand winners on 42.

"I think that will always be "well, I've done everything now".

"I'm feeling really, really good physically, even though I had few matches that went more than three hours". He aggressively returned serve and when Federer netted a forehand it was back to 3-3. "I personally I don't come back if he breaks me first", Federer said.

Federer is also bidding to win a 3rd Grand Slam title after turning 35.

It has been a remarkable return to the top of the game for the Swiss, who went almost five years without adding to his then record haul of 17 major titles.

Or longer. His six Australian Open crowns also drew him level with the all-time men's leaders of Roy Emerson and Novak Djokovic and he is the second oldest man to win a major in the Open Era.

If you don't start well against Federer, you are going to be in big trouble.

"I had my chance and Marin played well and at the end of the second I got nervous and that is the reason I lost the second set". Federer increased his level again, breaking Cilic again in the sixth game and then closing out at love - his celebrations delayed slightly by an unsuccessful challenge from Cilic on match point. Whatever be the result, this match has all the elements of a potential classic and the fans will be eagerly hoping that it goes down to the wire.
