Guillermo del Toro's fantasy romance received 13 nominations, including best picture.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday amid what's proving to be an unpredictable and highly political awards season. But the real drama taking center stage that night may have nothing to do with films, said Guillermo Reyes, a professor with ASU's School of Film, Dance and Theatre. We have more people of color in the Academy, more women in the Academy, and the demographic is becoming slightly younger as well.

Answer: Apparently it did.

Yet the Academy still has a long way to go, as a comparison between male and female nominees in some of the key categories attests. Both films are returning to the big screen this week to take advantage of their renewed interest. Just a year ago a whopping 774 new members were inducted, 39 percent female and 30 percent people of color. I think it's having an effect in today's voting. It feels like it's going in the right direction. Yes, the Academy's attempts at diversifying seem to be working.

"Beauty and the Beast", "Blade Runner 2049", "Darkest Hour", "Dunkirk, "The Shape of Water".

The 2017 documentary "The White Helmets" won Netflix an Academy Award past year, but the streaming service has never been recognized for a nondocumentary film. The first of those was "Grand Hotel", which won the 1931/32 trophy (the Oscars previously weren't so evenly divided by year).

Starring Daniel Kaluuya, who has been nominated for the best actor award, and directed by Joran Peele, who has been nominated for the best director award. ("Billboards" is nominated for best original screenplay.) "The Shape of Water" appears to be the film to watch and the leading contender. Or it could be they found other people's performances stronger. So how many nominations did it get? The countries that made it to the final five in the Best Foreign Language Film category are Chile, Lebanon, Russia, Hungary and Sweden.

Actresses Saiorse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf were also recognized for Lady Bird.

By the time the film was released, it had become a stirring dramatisation of a woman overcoming sexism and invisibility to find her voice as a journalist and corporate leader - a narrative that fit perfectly with a period during which issues of sexual harassment and assault, as well as female representation in front of and behind the camera, that is still engulfing Hollywood. It's possible the branch had gender in the back of their minds, but I do believe Greta Gerwig is very deserving of the nomination.

Let's face it: In our real world - you know, everywhere outside of Hollywood - the past year has been a fairly disheartening stretch of time for women, minorities, and progressive ideas in general. It's a fascinating year.

And what is Denzel Washington's Roman J. Israel, Esq. doing in the same category? What do you make of that?

According to E! News, this has left the actor with mixed emotions. Those are all good factors.

Likewise, Gary Oldman for his turn as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour 1/14 is way out ahead of his rivals. But what really has me pumped, and who I'd really love to win, is Frances McDormand.

Mary J. Blige earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, however the film missed out in the Best Picture category.

Willem Dafoe, "The Florida Project"; Woody Harrelson, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"; Richard Jenkins, "The Shape of Water"; Christopher Plummer, "All the Money in the World"; Sam Rockwell, "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri".

Q: What else is noteworthy about today's nominations? Greta Gerwig got a nod for her directing debut with "Lady Bird", but best director and best picture could come down to two men. He's a very powerful director. After receiving four nominations, Peele felt as if he was in "the opposite of the Sunken Place". They are basically newcomers as directors and were nominated. This is how we got movies like Mad Max: Fury Road up for Best Picture.

A total of nine films were nominated in the Best Picture segment, which also included "The Post", "Get Out", "Call Me By Your Name" and "Lady Bird".

Certainly there is precedent - the Golden Globes are more of a party than an Oscar-prediction vehicle. It'll be interesting to see how he behaves and how others behave toward him. If, for example, Academy members are divided by Three Billboards, that opens the way for a film that impressed them without stirring the kind of passions that divide audiences. Allison Janney won a Golden Globe for her performance in I, Tonya so I would not be surprised to see her win the Oscar and I would not be upset about it either.
