$24m refrigerators for Air Force One

  • The high-tech fridges have not been updated since 1990

As the Defense One web site noted a month later, the goal of that contract was for the replacement two of the five "cold chiller units" (i.e., refigerators) aboard Air Force One, the modified Boeing 747 airliner used for presidential transport. "It's not getting people rich".

Air Force One must be able to feed passengers and crew for weeks without resupplying, according to the news website Defense One.

Boeing will replace two of the five cold air chiller units on the aircraft.

Just before he took office, Trump criticized both Air Force One and Boeing for "out of control" costs associated with presidential planes.

"The engineering required to design, manufacture, conduct environmental testing and obtain Federal Aviation Administration certification are included in the cost", she added.

Stefanek said although the chillers use "available industry technology", they are created to hold 70 cubic feet of refrigerated storage.

Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek told CNN that some of the equipment on board was in need of replacement because of decreasing performance.

Despite undergoing maintenance, the fridges' reliability has declined, and they are now unable to support those mission requirements, an Air Force spokesperson said.

The new refrigerator units will have almost 70 cubic feet of storage space, she said.

The work is expected to be finished in October 2019.

One reason the refrigerators cost so much is that Air Force One is a heavily modified and customized 747 jets, according to Defense One.

However, Eric Schultz, a former senior adviser to Barack Obama, reacted to the news by tweeting that "we would have been impeached" if they had carried out such an upgrade to Air Force One during the previous administration.

Air Force One needs a new set of refrigerators. Five "chillers" cool a total of 26 climate-controlled compartments, according to the Air Force. Current refrigerators on the plane date to 1990.

In December 2016, President Donald Trump criticized the high costs of the Boeing-led program to replace the two Boeing 747-200-based VC-25A aircraft that began serving as the presidential jets in 1990.
