Following a delay late previous year, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is finally ready to launch its highly anticipated HomePod, its first foray into the booming market for voice-controlled smart speakers. The Siri powered smart speaker will be available for preorder in these countries on 26 January, with the device itself hitting stores on 9 February.
Revealed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2017, the HomePodsmart speaker is keeping fans waiting.
HomePod can send a message, set a timer, check the news and play podcasts with voice commands.
Over the last two fiscal quarters alone, Apple shipped an estimated 130 million Siri-enabled devices, AppleInsiderreports, which is probably one of the reasons why the company saw such a massive boost in usage over just seven months (Siri was first introduced in 2011 with the iPhone 4S). One could argue that the Cupertino company is late to the smart speaker party, but Apple is trying to separate themselves from the competition by focusing the HomePodmore on music and audio quality, versus smart capabilities. Neither Amazon Echo or Google Home are yet to offer this feature. And while other smart speakers support a variety of streaming music sources, HomePod is locked on Apple Music.
Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight, said: "This is a critically important device for Apple given the significant head start Amazon and Google have in this area".
There are also touch controls on top, so you can still control some HomePod features without using your voice. While the Max is such a large speaker that costs $399, the HomePods $349 price point is closer to the Max's than the most expensive Echo speaker (Echo Plus), which is $150. The feature is now only supported in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia.
