  • Members of Civil Society light candles and earthen lamps to condemn the rape and murder of seven-year-old girl in Kasur during a candlelight vigil in Islamabad Pakistan

After hectic efforts of 14 days by the Punjab government and civil as well as military agencies, the rapist-cum-killer of seven-year-old Kasur girl, Zainab , has been identified and taken into custody. As per police, Imran has confessed to killing the child.

Zainab was kidnapped on January 4 when she was on her way to Holy Quran class.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the arrest of the key suspect in the death of Zainab Ansari, one of several minors to be raped and killed in or near Kasur.

Speaking on this occasion, Zainab's father Amin Ansari thanked the JIT, police and his relatives for their efforts to apprehend the suspect.

The suspect arrested today is said to be a resident of the same area where Zainab's house is located, Dawn News reported.

Shehbaz had promised the minor's parents to bring her daughter to justice as soon as possible and that the culprit would be prosecuted in an anti-terrorism court with all legal formalities.

A JIT was formed by the Punjab government following the brutal rape and murder of Zainab.

Making an exception, he said as why not other rape suspects have been arrested if the world's second largest forensic laboratory is in Lahore.

"Zainab's murderer has been caught".

Kasur witnessed protest after body of Zainab was found in a garbage heap on Jan 10.

The spokesperson further said that circumstantial evidence pointed towards Imran's involvement in the case. He opined the court, while deciding the case under the law, might order public hanging of 24-year-old Imran, "the beast". The sister said that the suspect should be given an exemplary punishment. The police could probe the case in multiple traditional ways, he added.

Sharif added that Ali, a resident of Kasur district, confessed to the murder of Zainab and that his DNA matched samples found on her body.

Zainab's brother, Abu Bakar said that the culprit should be given an exemplary sentence so that others like him get a message. Well done, Shahbaz Sharif and the Punjab Police, said the former premier.
