Washington earned his first National Football League job with the Chicago Bears back in 2008, first serving as the assistant defensive line coach for two years before being promoted to the primary defensive line coach in 2010.

Cardinals offensive tackle D.J. Humphries also expressed support for Wilks, who like him is a native of Charlotte.

According to Kent Somers of AZ Central Sports, new Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks is expected to hire Panthers LBs coach Al Holcomb as his defensive coordinator. Wilks spent five seasons as Panthers secondary coach before his promotion a year ago. He has worked primarily as a defensive backs coach, with stops in both Chicago and San Diego.

The Cardinals announced Monday that Wilks has signed a four-year contract (with the option for a fifth year) to be the Cards' head coach.

Wilks spent the first part of his coaching career in college, spending one season as head coach of Savannah State.

The Cardinals reportedly interviewed at least nine candidates for the head coaching position.

In Arizona, Wilks takes over the post previously held by Bruce Arians, who retired at the conclusion of the 2017 season. While some jobs are officially still open, reports have said teams have settled on their coaches and had to wait for the playoffs to end to make it official: Josh McDaniels to the Colts, Matt Patricia to the Lions and Pat Shurmur to the Giants.

Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson apparently heard the news.
