18 civilians killed as siege on Kabul Intercontinental Hotel ends

  • Smoke rises from the Intercontinental Hotel during an attack in Kabul Afghanistan

A 12-hour siege following Saturday night's attack ended on Sunday.

They also said these elements had worked on President Ashraf Ghani's electoral campaign and that now they are employed in government departments.

By 10am, special forces could be seen sweeping the roof of the hotel as firefighters attempted to extinguish a blaze which had ripped through the sixth floor. Security forces eventually killed the gunmen after a 16-hour siege, reportedly with cooperation from Western military officials. More than that it shows how weak, helpless and uninspired the Afghan forces actually are.

A statement on the website of Foreign Ministry said: "The government and the people of Pakistan convey solidarity and support with the government and people of Afghanistan at this dastardly terrorist attack".

"The body of the foreigner, a woman, was recovered from the sixth floor as the last attacker was being killed", he added.

Ministry spokesperson Najib Danish said that 11 of the foreigners killed were employees of KamAir, a private Afghan airline. Ten people were wounded.

The Taliban, which targeted the hotel in 2011, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The U.S. embassy had issued a warning one day earlier that "extremist groups may be planning an attack against hotels" in Kabul.

"We are hiding in our rooms".

His phone has been switched off since then.

Abdul Rahman Naseri, a guest who was at the hotel for a conference, was in the hall of the hotel when he saw four gunmen dressed in army uniforms. An anonymous 24-year-old hotel staff member told AFP the security fled "without a fight" and did nothing to stop the onslaught.

"Everything became chaotic in a moment".

Also describing the militants as wearing civilian clothes, he said they killed "dozens" of people, opening each room and "raining" bullets.

"Suddenly (militants) attacked the dinner gathering".

The attack appears similar to the attack by terrorists on the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai in 2008.

Less than a month ago, a suicide bombing in Kabul killed 41 people, while a truck bombing in May killed more than 150.

Omeri said one of the assailants had earlier tried to flush out survivors by claiming to be Afghan police and that when North Atlantic Treaty Organisation special forces arrived they feared they could be attackers in disguise.

The attack on the Intercontinental was just one of several bloody assaults Sunday.
