New Zealand prime minister announces she's pregnant

  • New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her partner Clarke Gayford are expecting their first child in June 2018. Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters will take on Prime Ministerial duties for six weeks after the baby is born

Ardern said she discovered her pregnancy only six days before learning she would be prime minister, and it was "100 per cent a surprise". She has chose to take six weeks of maternity leave, during which, New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters will step in and be the acting Prime Minister.

Ardern said she was personally open to answering questions about her plans but said that it was inappropriate to suggest that other women should be forced to do the same.

Ardern revealed on Friday that she had unexpectedly found out she was pregnant on October 13, just six days before she was propelled into the country's top job when New Zealand First Party leader Peters announced he was siding with Labour in post-election negotiations.

On the show, Arden said, "I think a lot of women face this dilemma in the workplace no matter what their profession or job might be".

Her partner, Clarke Gayford, is attending the caucus as well.

New Zealand has long held a progressive reputation, having been the first country to given women the right to vote in 1893.

"Aside from the usual excitement we both share over this news - and the fact that it was a surprise for us - we have put in place plans to deal with our impending arrival", Ardern said during the press conference". Her pregnancy is one of the very few examples of an elected leader holding office while pregnant.

Ardern is the second female world leader that will give birth while in power.

"Catherine Denuve has her freedom of speech and I respect her as a free woman, but I don't recognise myself at all in what they wrote, what they signed".

"It will be a donation that hopefully reflects that I am in a special set of circumstances", Ms Ardern said. She is thought to be the first modern head of government to give birth while in office. In the interim, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters will serve as acting prime minister. Her third child, Prince Andrew, was born in 1960, and the fourth, Prince Edward, in 1964. She took two weeks' maternity leave to give birth later in the same year, as she worked toward turning around the struggling company.
