Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announces nine new smart cities

The other cities take account of smart cities are Erode in Tamil Nadu, Diu in Union Territory of Daman and Diu, Biharsharif in Bihar, Bareilly, Saharanpur and Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and Kavaratti in Lakshadweep.

Puri said that the nine cities selected have proposed an investment of Rs 12,824 crore, of which Rs 10,639 crore would be in ABD and Rs 2,185 crore in Pan City initiatives which would impact 35.3 lakh people living in these areas. Meanwhile, the government announced commencement of the Liveability Index Programme in 116 cities.

The quest of hundred smart cities was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2015. The final list for SCM was announced on Friday.

"These 9 cities have approximately 409 projects", Puri added.


Over private investment into the projects under the scheme, he said, roughly 25 per cent of the total investment would come from private sector. Shillong will be the 100th city provided it submits its proposal to the Centre in next three months.

The union minister added that the review of Smart City projects such as Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Smart Cities Mission, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Awaz Yojana was done with Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and was optimistic on the results.

Puri disclosed that the central government has released about Rs9,900 crore so far to various state governments, which have cumulatively spent about Rs2,000 odd crore.

The cities can be rated as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 -star based on their compliance with the protocol conditions specified for each of the ratings, the minister said. In the duration of 2 years, which is a small period in terms of urban development life-cycle, the mission is picking up momentum, he said.
