FC Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that central defender Gerard Pique has extended his contract with the club until the end of June 2022. He joined Manchester United in 2004 and returned to Barcelona in 2008 under coach Pep Guardiola.

Pique has won six La Liga titles to date, five Copa del Reys and three Champions Leagues.

The 30-year-old Spain worldwide, who moved to the LaLiga leaders from Manchester United 10 years ago, has committed his future to the 24-time Spanish champions - with a buyout clause of 500 million euros (£441.6m).

Pique, who turns 31 next month, has won it all in a period of dominance for Barcelona.

Long-serving Barcelona defender Gerard Pique puts pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year deal, which has a release clause of £440m inserted.

Meanwhile, the club will be hoping Sergi Roberto follows in his footsteps in the near future after last month both the player and president Josep Maria Bartomeu admitted negotiations had begun for the midfielder to sign a new long-term deal. His current contract was to expire later this year.

The new contract also includes a 500m euro (£440m) buy-out clause.

Pique will continue at Barcelona until 2022.
