Three flu-related deaths were reported this week in Cuyahoga County, bringing to five the total number of flu-related deaths this season.

All of the patients had "high risk" health conditions and died from complications of the flu, according to officials.

As of January 6, Oakland County has more than 950 reported flu cases since October 1, 2017.

"An early season does not equate to a more severe season", she said, adding that this year the number of hospitalizations and deaths are about four weeks ahead of last year's.

For the week ending January 6, the county reported 278 laboratory-confirmed cases and 66 hospitalizations. All the deaths statewide are in the age group 50 and older.

Public health officials think the current flu season is going to be worse than last year's because the dominant flu strain, H3N2, causes more fatalities than other flu viruses. OCCHD was one of the first public health departments in the nation to receive accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board.

Signs the flu could be peaking in St. Louis County - new cases for the week ending January 14th totaled 1074, that's down from 1282 the previous week. Details may change as more information becomes available.

Symptoms include fever or chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and tiredness. "The flu vaccine is the best public health tool we have, and an annual flu shot is recommended to everyone over six months", Wooten said. Getting the flu can be serious.
