Walmart unveiled a pharmacy initiative January 17 to supply customers with a product to facilitate the safe disposal of excess opioids.

The product, a powder called DisposeRX, is meant to be used by customers who no longer need their prescription painkillers or are concerned that someone else might take their pills.

As part of its efforts to address the crisis, Walmart says it will also provide ongoing counseling to prescription customers at its 4,700 pharmacy locations.

Walmart says patients will receive a free DisposeRx packet and opioid safety information brochure whenever filling and picking up any new Class II opioid prescription at Walmart pharmacies.

"The healthy and safety of our patients is a critical priority", said Marybeth Hays, executive vice president of Consumable and Health and Wellness at Walmart.

The product is known as DisposeRX, and it enables an individual to effectively get rid of left over medications by turning them into a useless gel.

What Walmart wants to do by including packets along with the prescription is to make it possible for you to dispose of those five pills at home for free. "I commend Walmart for taking this innovative approach to help keep unused prescription drugs out of the wrong hands". The company said that as of last fall, it had donated around 1.5 million drug disposal packets across the country.

Although the offer of DisposeRX for free is coming as a result of the opioid epidemic, the product works on any type of prescription drug, according to Holaday.

Safe disposal of prescription opioids is a necessary component to preventing overdoses.

The new way to safely dispose of opioids from Walmart is DisposeRx.

Walmart already was among pharmacies that sell another product, a pouch, to neutralize drugs. CVS and Walgreens now offer medication-disposal kiosks at hundreds of locations, a service that Wal-Mart doesn't provide. John Boozman, R-Ark., where the company's headquarters is located.

According to Sen. John Boozman R-Ark., "about one-third of medications go unused", which can prove to be risky - especially when children or teens have access to them.
