Ford to make huge electric push

  • Ford just had its worst day in a year and a half

That Ford is working on a similar idea shouldn't come as a surprise, but that doesn't mean we're not excited to see what they're cooking up.

As battery prices rapidly decrease and regulators starting to crack down on the internal combustion engine, auto companies are capitalising on electric vehicle models. The Mach 1, the hybrid F-150, and the Mustang hybrid are scheduled should make their debut sometime in 2020.

Ford did not identify its planned cars as of the moment, but it did introduce a model called the Mach 1 at the Detroit auto show.

Toyota is racing to commercialize a breakthrough battery technology during the first half of the 2020s with the potential to cut the cost of making electric cars.

"Ford is focused on driving its electric vehicle business forward, both with hybrid vehicles and full battery-electric vehicles with research led by Ford's Team Edison", Ford said.

Ford's additional investments in electric vehicles contrasted with numerous vehicle launches at the Detroit show which featured trucks and SUVs. The new range will consist of all-new vehicles and electrified versions of existing models.

The show runs from January 20 through the 28 at Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan.

But, CEO Jim Hackett (who replaced Mark Fields as chief exec back in May) maintains his confidence in the blue oval.

"Mass market electric cars are poised to disrupt vehicle production, supply chains and the energy industry to an extent not seen since 1913, when consumers first dismounted their horses and jumped behind the wheel of a Ford Model T", the note said.

The plan was finalised in recent months after an extensive review, a person familiar with the process said.

Ford's more aggressive approach in the EV market is quite understandable, since most automakers are already squandering to step up their game when it comes to bringing electric cars to consumers.

However, the appeal of a new auto smell isn't universal, and Ford is anxious that its models smell too much for Chinese consumers.

A big part of what's next is autonomous vehicles, with no steering wheel and no pedals.
