Bright meteor sets off quake sensors in MI

  • A meteor was spotted in the sky shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 16 in a number of areas throughout Southeast Michigan

A meteor over MI on Tuesday night caused a loud bang and a brilliant flash of light that was caught on video.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake was centered about five miles west-southwest of New Haven, Michigan, located about 40 miles northeast of Detroit. However, meteors over the midwestern United States are rare, so last night's meteor was a unique show for communities in the area.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that the blast from a meteor caused a 2.0 natural disaster over Detroit and southeast MI on Tuesday night around 8:10 pm.

The earthshaking rumblings felt in MI last night weren't an quake, but rather vibrations from a booming noise caused by a meteor whizzing overhead, according to the National natural disaster Information Center (NEIC). The fireball had perhaps a brightness between the full moon and the sun.

The meteor sighting lit up social media. The American Meteor Society received 355 reports of a fireball in southeast MI, which was spotted as far away as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. But this measurement doesn't express how much energy the meteor released as it flew overhead, Bellini said. But "most people don't see meteors this bright", he noted.

Per CBS, numerous other social media users captured shots of the moment the suspected meteor broke up in the skies over MI.

A meteor is just a small piece of rock that comes close enough to the Earth to enter its atmosphere. This will likely spur meteorite hunters to seek out bits of the material where it may have landed near Detroit.

"It looks like from videos and reports we've gotten [that it's a] meteor", said Jordan Dale, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake, in an interview with Detroit Free Press.

In this case, however, the US Geologic Survey confirmed that this bright light over MI was a rather large meteor that managed to break through the Earth's atmosphere. The noise reported along with the loud boom is also indicative of a bolide, Narlock says.
