  • Trump strategist Steve Bannon hit by grand jury subpoena

Bannon had only secondhand knowledge of two key issues: the drafting of a misleading statement released by the White House after the meeting with a Russian lawyer, and Trump's firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, according to the Times.

A new book by Michael Wolff contained explosive allegations that Bannon was critical of Trump and his reported closeness with Russian Federation during the days of his campaign for the presidential election.

Bannon was a liaison to the controversial data-analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica, that was used by the Trump campaign during the election, and was a member of the administration when the president fired national security adviser Michael Flynn and Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

When he left the White House, Bannon said he would work to help Trump and wage a populist campaign from the outside. Investigators are likely to question Mr Bannon on the ties between the president's associates and Russian Federation as well as his often controversial conduct in office.

As I recently wrote here, it is possible that Bannon or others have been quietly talking to Mueller for some time, playing a confidential role similar to Deep Throat in the Watergate case.

The fallout over Steve Bannon's comments in the Fire and Fury book just took a new form, that of a subpoena from Robert Mueller.

California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told CNN last week he wanted to hear from Bannon about "the basis of his concern over money laundering, and why this meeting at Trump Tower represented his treason and certainly unpatriotic at a minimum".

Bannon has limited firsthand knowledge about two key issues within Mueller's purview - the president's firing of James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, a decision made without Bannon present, and the drafting of a misleading statement about the subject of the June 2016 meeting with Russians, in which they promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

He was quoted as calling a meeting in June 2016 between Mr Trump's son Donald Jr and a group of Russians "treasonous". Whatever led Bannon to talk of treason, when he first learned about Russian support of Trump he nearly certainly made internal inquiries to learn what was going on. He also predicted the special counsel investigation would center on money laundering.

Mr Bannon's attorney was not immediately available for comment.

Bannon recently lost his job at the helm of Trump-friendly Breitbart in part because of his recent comments about Trump and Russian Federation.

When Bannon's comments became public, Trump excoriated his former strategist, whom he accused of having "lost his mind."

Bannon is scheduled to testify before the panel on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the committee's plans. "That's all I recall of that conversation".
