  • Metro Detroit immigrant deported to Mexico after 30 years in US

His wife and children are US citizens and he's fought hurdles for years to become a citizen as well, but to no avail, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Thirty years after moving to the United States as a child, a 39-year-old landscaper and father has been deported back to Mexico.

Even before the Trump administration called for an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, Garcia was too old to qualify.

Garcia and his family tried for month sto get a stay to allow him to remain in the USA until the new bills were voted on, but he was denied in recent weeks and given until January 15 to leave.

"That's when the tears just started flowing, because we knew that was going to be it it wasn't much that we could do", Cindy Garcia told WXYZ-TV. "All we could do is make memories".

Yet in November, he was ordered to leave the country, because despite having lived here for 29 years and being a law-abiding citizen, he was still brought to America at 10 years old by undocumented immigrants, and that left him a sitting duck for the Trump administration's unholy crackdown on American immigrants writ large.

Accompanied by ICE agents, Garcia went through security as supporters around him held up signs that read, "Stop Separating Families".

- After 30 years in Detroit, Jorge Garcia said goodbye to his family as he complied with a deportation order back to Mexico on Monday morning. Jorge was a child. "We panicked. We didn't know what to do". I just want to get my story out there", Cindy Garcia said on CNN's "Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin. "Day?" said Erik Shelley, a leader with Michigan United that advocates for immigrant rights and other issues.

Cindy said agents said because Jorge doesn't have a criminal record, he could stay through the Christmas holiday.

Attempts at getting Jorge legal status as an American citizen or resident following his marraige to Cindy (an American Citizen) resulted in deportation proceedings.

"He came at age 10 ... he's never been in trouble, period".

"It's like any minute now he's going to walk through the door, but he's not, he's in Mexico", said Cindy Garcia. "He's never even gotten a traffic ticket".

Garcia's wife, Cindy, spoke out on her husband's deportation, describing the situation as a "nightmare". "You have no choice but to face it head on and accept what is being thrown at you because there is nothing else that you can do".
