But the pressure will be on publishers and brands to create content that generates conversations if they want to improve their odds of being seen in News Feed. He also conceded that the public content was crowding out personal moments and depriving users of having meaningful social interactions.

The change announced by Mr Zuckerberg follows criticism that Facebook's algorithms may have prioritized misleading news and misinformation in people's feeds, influencing the 2016 American presidential election as well as political discourse in other countries.

"As an industry, if customers are not enjoying the experience of our advertising, then we need to rethink how we go about doing that advertising". And false news may still spread-for instance, if a relative or friend posts a link with a false article that has many comments, the post will still be prominently displayed on a user's News Feed. "We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health", Zuckerberg stated. On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos - even if they're entertaining or informative - may not be as good.

Zuckerberg also said his team has found that users interact more with live videos, as opposed to regular ones, perhaps suggesting that publishers should focus more on that type of content going forward.

The first inklings Facebook was looking to make changes to the way public content is shown on the platform came last October, when the company commenced several tests removing brand and public content entirely from user news feeds into a separate area of their profile. If a piece of news is bring shared and engaged with the most, it seems to develop credibility (and a leg if you will) of its own and gets wider distribution irrespective of its source.

"It wants people who have been friends to become even closer, to have deeper discussions (on Facebook)".

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has resolved to "fix" Facebook in 2018, starting with changes the "News Feed" algorithm to prioritize posts from a user's friends, family and groups over posts from publishers and brands, including news organizations such as KHTS. "It's now part of that data point that Facebook is collecting about you".

Fionnuala Lawes expressed concerns over the latest news and how it will affect people like her who run pages, and questioned how charities specifically will be affected. The pages you choose will be annotated with a blue star. "Will our only option to keep our outreach be to boost our posts and do sponsored ads?" "But for them to make such a fundamental change in the platform - I don't think people were really anticipating it".

While Facebook's USA fans could still have the choice of continuing to get their preferred content served to them through the option under the News Feed tab (this option allows them to prioritise pages and may be a beta), there is no such option available to Indian users. "Facebook will be back primarily in the business of making us feel bad about the inferiority of our vacations, the relative mediocrity of our children, teasing us into sharing more of our private selves". Notice that in the image above, the "Liked" and "Following" icons are shaded in blue.

So what exactly do these changes mean for you? "Traditional brick and mortar, for one, would benefit immensely from Facebook's advanced targeting and optimization features as well as its mobile-first ad formats, such as Collection and Canvas, that recreate the physical storefront online". Those that use ‘engagement-bate to encourage discussion will be demoted and shown lower in the news feed. If it's a page you don't mind seeing but aren't particularly interested in, click "Default".
