England won the toss and chose to bowl against Australia in Sunday's opening one-day global at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Marsh continued his renaissance from the Test series with 50 from 66 balls, but was bowled by a cleverly disguised wrong'un from Rashid.

Roy teed off early on against Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, showing a willingness to "chance his arm" in the words of the Australia captain Steven Smith that epitomises the daring of England's limited overs set-up since they started from scratch in the aftermath of a dire 2015 World Cup campaign.

The home side set England a target of 305 in the first of five One Day Internationals, a modest target made to seem all the more average by Roy's marvellous century.

Australia captain Steve Smith said his team's total was nearly 40 runs short of expected, and the early bowlers came under attack from England's top order.

With England taking the attack to Australia, the hosts finally stemmed the flow of runs and got a much-needed breakthrough when Mitchell Starc had Bairstow caught behind for 14.

Liam Plunkett claimed three wickets but went for 71 runs from his 10 overs, while Mark Wood was the most impressive of the English bowlers with the wicket of Warner in his return of 1-49.

England captain Eoin Morgan paid tribute to Roy, whose 221-run stand alongside Joe Root (91 not out) ensured the tourists were never in trouble - despite the loss of three quick wickets as they approached the finishing line.

Yet on this occasion he made an even bigger impact, clubbing 16 fours and five sixes in a stunning performance.

Having been an onlooker for the Test series, Roy was an unlikely hero.

"We probably left ourselves a few short, we lost a few wickets in the middle and that stopped us going from as hard as we liked at the back end", Smith said at the post-match presentation.

"We tried everything we could to pull them back and take wickets but it wasn't our night".

"To be out there on the MCG, win the game and make a score like that is incredibly special", he said. I had a tough year in 2017, being dropped from the side gave me a bit of a kick, recognised where I am at and where my preparation is and how to start getting ready for internationals. "Halesy was pretty disappointed".

'It was a tough season last season so to be selected this time was incredibly special.

"Incredible from Jason. He's quite imposing as a batsman", Morgan said.
