Google Buys UK Audio Startup Redux

  • Google has bought a company that turns any surface into a speaker

This technology can free up space in the devices, creating room for batteries or other components.

Redux shares were transferred to Google on December 13, according to United Kingdom regulatory filings, though Crunchbase said the deal took place back in August.

While no one was paying attention at the end of 2017, Google swooped in and purchased a company in the United Kingdom called Redux that has a couple of pretty unique ideas around display panels.

Google declined to comment on the price and details of the deal. However, it is believed the deal went through in August. Redux's technology could help there on new devices. "Redux actuators deliver naturalistic wide-frequency-range audio from a panel or display (without micro-speakers and apertures) - providing a versatile and robust overall solution", the startup explained on its now dead website.

At the time, it said the sound quality was 'decent'.

Redux raised $5m in March 2017 from investors including Arie Capital. It's speculative, but it could be that Google plans on heating things up in the continued 2018 bezel race with some in-screen speakers on the next Pixel (s), or maybe it plans on using the company's improved haptics for a Taptic-like experience.

Some of Redux's tech has already appeared in PCs and vehicle infotainment systems.

Google has already removed the headphone jack from the its latest Pixel phone, now it looks as though the company is heading in a direction where it will be able to send the speaker packing too. The Verge had some hands-on time with the company's tech previous year, trying out a tablet which vibrated its screen to function as a speaker, as well as a number of displays that used haptic feedback to mimic the feel of buttons, sliders, and dials.

One of the more recent purchases by Alphabet was obtaining HTC in 2017, for over $1 billion ($750 million).
