Ohio Department of Health reports second pediatric death in the state

The first reported death from pediatric flu in the 2017-2018 season was of a four-year-old boy in the Dayton-area.

The child died at Dayton Children's Hospital on Saturday, January 6.

A 4-year-old boy from Montgomery County has died from complications due to the flu. CDC says that flu activity in the US increased sharply during the first week of January, and is now categorized as widespread in 46 states. "You can still get the flu, no vaccine is flawless. Our hearts go out the family", says Jon Woltmann, MD, infectious disease department at Dayton Children's Hospital.

Up until December 30, 2017, there were 11,275 laboratory-confirmed cases across the country, 74 per cent of which are attributed to influenza A. There have been a total of 1,050 influenza-related hospitalizations and 34 deaths across the country. There have been 3,854 flu hospitalizations reported in Ohio. Rodriguez explained that this can happen because the influenza virus is constantly evolving, presenting a moving target for vaccine makers.

Other effective ways to avoid getting or spreading the flu include: washing hands frequently or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer; covering coughs and sneezes with tissues, or coughing or sneezing into elbows; avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth; and staying home when sick.


However, Murti said those figures are an underestimate of the actual number of cases, as most people don't seek medical attention for flu and, therefore, aren't tested. Both are indicated by coughing and a runny nose, but the flu is separated by headaches, chills, a possible fever and extreme fatigue.

The Ohio Department of Health said influenza A, or H3N2, is the most common virus this season. Anyone who has an influenza-like illness presenting with fever of more than 100 [degrees Fahrenheit] and sore throat could be suspected to have the flu.

Get vaccinated. The list of reasons to avoid vaccination is short (such as having a severe reaction to the vaccine in the past); and no, the standard injected flu vaccine can not cause you to get the flu.

National media outlets are reporting that the flu virus is less effective than usual this year, which could be a cause of the severe season.

Officials say this will be a "very substantial influenza season", with the bug being especially bad in California where 27 deaths are linked to it.
