Researchers from Queen Mary University, London, analyzed the results of eight surveys on smoking habits in English-speaking countries and found that a single cigarette is enough to spark a daily smoking habit - at least temporarily - in 69 percent of people. He also stated that this is the first time where the link between trying the first cigarette and becoming a regular smoker presented in a large data set.

The team analysed data from the United Kingdom, the US, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

Combined, the surveys (three from the U.S., three from the United Kingdom, one from Australia, and one from New Zealand) included responses from more than 216,000 individuals who had been selected at random to provide a representative sample of the general adult population of the countries involved.

The latest research, published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research, sought to identify the proportion of smokers' "conversion rate" - how many people start smoking daily after trying cigarettes once.

Researchers found that just over 60% of adults said they had tried a cigarette at some point in their lives, with nearly 69% of those noting that they had, at least for a period, gone on to smoke cigarettes daily.

Further, Hajek revealed that the United Kingdom witnessed a commendable reduction in smoking, and the recent findings confirm that. During the same period, 19.3% of 18-to-24-year-olds used to smoke compared to 25.8% in 2010.

But, in 2016 it had gone down to 15.5 per cent which is around 7.6 million people.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the charity Action on Smoking and Health, called for the greater government regulation of tobacco sales. She said, "The government is refusing to introduce licensing for tobacco retailers, even though there is strong support for this both from the public and retailers".

It's not just the people in the United Kingdom who are taking a positive step towards leading a cigarette-free healthy life, but the name synonymous with tobacco since the 19 century - Phillip Morris - is also taking a step towards quitting selling cigarettes.

St. Vincent Health's cessation program focuses on the provider and Kelly Peisker says they urge them to ask smokers about quitting more often.

In the United Kingdom, the ream recorded significant reduction in smoking.
