  • Alligators get a nose up on icy conditions

You don't have to wonder any longer thanks to the people at the Shallotte River Swamp Park in Brunswick County.

The Shallotte River Swamp Park shared videos on Facebook of their alligators with their noses stuck high in the air through cracks in the ice, and they appeared not to be moving.

Despite this ingenious survival instinct, Howard said gators can't stay in icy water indefinitely.

In a rarely seen occurrence, video released on Monday showed alligators trying to stay alive in a frozen North Carolina pond by sticking their snouts through the ice.

"Pretty good reason why they have been around this long for millions of years", he says, and added they are doing well. "Pretty fantastic. ... This is the time of year when they are just hanging out and waiting for it to get warm". Their metabolism slows down in the cold conditions and they go into a lethargic state.

The reptiles will then drop down to the bottom of a body of water, where they can hold their breath for up to 24 hours.

The gators are able to sense the moment when the water is going to freeze, at which point they stick their noses out and allow the surface to freeze around them, as if that were only a minor inconvenience. According to experts, it's not likely the animal will react in such a situation, at least not while the water was still frozen around it. The residents of a North Carolina city have had the change of witnessing a breathtaking display of biological prestidigitation - frozen alligators.
