Trump declares he's deporting 200000 Salvadoran immigrants from US

  • Many Salvadorians in New York face uncertain future

The Trump administration will not extend the Temporary Protected Status program, which has allowed almost 200,000 Salvadorans to stay in the USA legally, according to a report Monday.

The statement noted that the administration will delay the TPS termination 18 months to allow Congress time to "craft a potential legislative solution".

Ann Coulter applauded Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen's decision to rescind Temporary Protection Status for Salvadorans Monday, telling The Daily Caller, "They've got to go".

President Donald Trump's decision signals a departure from the stance of previous administrations, which granted and re-authorized temporary protected status for Hondurans beginning in the late 1990s.

The decision is likely to please immigration hard-liners who argue the TPS program was never meant to provide long-term residency.

DHS officials said 262,500 Salvadorans have been granted TPS permits, but recent estimates indicate the number of people who reside in the country with that status is closer to 200,000.

This fall, her department ended temporary protected designations for thousands of immigrants, including more than 50,000 from Haiti and thousands more from Nicaragua and Sudan, which critics say needlessly uproots contributing immigrants to send them back to unstable countries.

DHS has made an effort to emphasize that TPS depends on the original reason for the designation, not current conditions.

The issue of rampant violence, linked to criminal gangs in El Salvador, was not a factor in the administration's review of their status, according to the administration officials, who asked not to be named.

Critics immediately slammed the decision.

Supporters of restrictive immigration policies have long maintained that the application of TPS has been stretched too far. "It's inhumane and not consistent with American values".

Lawmakers from both parties who represent cities and states with large immigrant populations blasted Monday's DHS decision, including Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., who called it "a shameful and cynical move" whose goal was to "score political points with the extreme right wing Republican base". "Nielsen has told 200,000 of our friends, neighbors, and colleagues -people who sought safety in the United States and have had full permission to build lives here for almost 17 years - that they have 18 months to pack their bags and return to El Salvador, a country that is plagued by the highest homicide rate in Latin America, a 95 percent impunity rate, and escalating human rights abuses". "Since 2001, these people have established themselves in the United States, making countless contributions to our society and our local communities".
