  • Google Unifies Its Payment Platforms, Introduces Google Pay

Google has announced that it is merging its Android Pay and Google Wallet into a new service called Google Pay.

"With Google Pay on Fandango, you can buy tickets easily 00 making checkout simpler than ever", says Pali Bhat, VP of product management, payments at Google.

The feature first appeared in May 2013 for American users, and seems to again suggest that Google is ramping up its activities in the online payments market. There's Android Pay for checkout lines, Google Wallet for sending money to your friends, and Chrome's autofill feature for online purchases.

Early adopters of the service include Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse, and Instacart.

If you're a developer looking to support Google Pay on your website, check out to Google's payment FAQ site or the support pages from Google's payment processing partners. And the same changes will come to Google Tez, an Indian payment application that's akin to Android Pay. That changed in 2015, when Google made a decision to spin off the tap-and-pay portion of the service into Android Pay.

The launch of Google Pay is an attempt to create some brand cohesion, but there's no clarity on how long that might take, he said.

"Some consumers may think this is a totally new payment platform, but in-store mobile payment usage is low anyway, so the largest potential impact will be with online sales, and that's where Google is trying to compete against Amazon, PayPal and the card networks", Pucci said.
