  • Massive manhunt for gunman after Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed

Authorities in Washington state say they now have a detailed description of a man suspected of involvement in the fatal shooting of sheriff's deputy.

Law enforcement recovered one of the suspects' weapons from the scene.

Several shots were fired during the chase, striking McCartney. The second suspected burglar police are hunting was described as tall and thin with curly dark hair in a ponytail and "pock marks" on the right side of his face.

Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor identified the officer as 34-year-old Daniel McCartney of Yelm.

Deputy Daniel McCartney was shot and killed during a foot chase as he responded to a home invasion in the Frederickson area, southeast of Tacoma, late Sunday night.

McCartney was killed after deputies were called to a home in the 5100 block of 200th Street East for a home invasion at about 11:30 p.m.

The responding deputy encountered two burglary suspects, the department said. One was found dead at the scene.

A Pierce County deputy has died after being shot responding to a robbery call near Spanaway, the Sheriff's Department confirmed.

McCartney is the first police officer killed in the line of duty in the Seattle area since November 30, 2016 when a Tacoma police Officer was fatally shot in response to a domestic-violence call, local media said.

The deputy was taken to a hospital in Tacoma where he died.

It's unclear if the deputy was able to return fire at the suspects, who were not immediately identified. We are with his family now, and we ask that you please keep his family, friends, and our department in your thoughts and prayers.

They say it appears the suspect may have partially disrobed as he fled. One suspect was found dead at the scene and another is on the loose and being sought by authorities. "He understood what it meant to stand in for other people, to protect other people". "Know that. People in the community need to know that".
