  • Man seriously injured following explosion at Stockholm metro station

Two people have been injured in an explosion outside an underground station in southern Stockholm, authorities have said.

He picked up an item from the ground that exploded, police say.

A 45-year-old woman was also hospitalized, but her condition is unknown.

The seriously injured person was reported to be a man in his 60s. "He has been taken to hospital".

Police checked in and around the subway station after the blast to make sure there were no other explosive devices.

"Someone has used some type of explosive material", Lars-Ake Stevelind, a rescue official, told Swedish television station SVT.

A man in Stockholm died after he picked up a suspected hand grenade from the ground which detonated in his hand, Swedish police said.

Local resident Milorad Jencic told AFP he was shocked as witnesses and onlookers gathered around the police cordon.

Police patrols have been stepped up in the area and investigations are taking place.

Numerous illegal hand grenades found in Sweden are being imported from former Yugoslav nations, he said.
