Packers hiring Brian Gutekunst as general manager

  • How to pronounce name of new Packers GM Brian Gutekunst

According to multiple reports, the Green Bay Packers have hired Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager and will be inking him to a five-year deal.

The Green Bay Packers will continue interviews with top internal candidates to replace general manager Ted Thompson on Friday. He spent a year as a scouting assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs, then returned to the Packers as a college scout.

The 44-year old has been the Director of Player Personnel since March 2016, but he has been with the team for 19 season in the player personnel department. Most notably is the Packers at least showing some interest in former scout/personnel man turned Seahawks general manager John Schneider.

The man replacing him will come from a similar mold, as the Packers made a decision to give in-house candidate Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager.

Gutekunst attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, playing football for two seasons before suffering a career-ending shoulder injury.

Ball, the team's salary-cap expert and chief contract negotiator, has worked in a variety of roles during his time in the National Football League - dating back to serving as the Kansas City Chiefs' assistant strength and conditioning coach in 1993, when Packers coach Mike McCarthy was an assistant coach - but does not have a scouting background.

He was also considered one of the frontrunners for the job with the San Francisco 49ers a year ago that eventually went to John Lynch.

Chances are that someone (perhaps Bob McGinn) will have a detailed story regarding things done behind the scenes to help Gutekunst get the job, and things that will happen behind the scenes now that the Packers have a new football boss. The request for the Green Bay native was denied.
