  • Temperatures in Sydney were expected to climb to 40C over the weekend with areas in the west likely to experience highs

The hottest Test day on record appeared to be 43.1 degree Celsius in Adelaide in 1908, the Bureau of Meteorology told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Record high temperatures in Australia have sparked bush fires across three states in the south east, burning several homes and other buildings to the ground.

"Sorry, in our earlier checks we missed a 47.8 degrees C temperature recorded at an old Richmond station (now closed) in 1939".

The temperature in Sydney hit an nearly 80-year high of 47.3 degrees Celsius (117 Fahrenheit) on Sunday - a sharp contrast to the bitter cold that has gripped much of the U.S.

So, while brutally cold temperatures hit the U.S., emergency services in Sydney prepared residents on the other side of the equator for dangers of a different sort. Police are advising people to stay hydrated and look out for the elderly.

In Penrith, west of Sydney, residents sweltered as the town bore the brunt of the heat on Sunday.

The greater Sydney area was given a severe fire danger rating.

A total fire ban is in place across Sydney and the Hunter region as NSW residents face temperatures soaring into the mid-40s.

At the Sydney Cricket Ground, spectators removed their shirts as they watched the fifth Ashes Test between Australia and England.

The extreme heat forced a stop in play at the Sydney International tennis tournament after the mercury reached 40C at 10am.

There's some relief in sight however, with temperatures predicted to be slightly "colder" Monday - a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius or 91.4 degrees Fahrenheit for those hunkering down in the cold further north.
