Trump seeks $18 billion to extend border wall over 10 years

  • USA: Trump Asks For More Funds to Build Mexico Border Wall

Members of Congress involved in the immigration negotiations had requested the information from DHS, according to a DHS administration official.

The Trump administration is preparing to ask Congress for $18 billion to build President Donald Trump's envisioned "big, attractive wall" along the U.S. -Mexico border.

Durbin said the latest White House move, coming as Congress also struggles to pass a bill by January 19 to fund the government through September, could push federal agencies closer to a shutdown. "With this demand, he seems to be heading in that direction", Durbin said in a statement. The White House and lawmakers in both parties agree that Dreamers should be protected but remain divided over the details of a plan.

Republican Senator John Cornyn accused Democrats in a tweet of trying to force a deal on Dreamers by doing a "slow walk" on efforts to approve critical disaster aid and defense spending.

Some House Republicans have been clamoring to use Dreamer legislation to attach additional money for immigration enforcement throughout the country, which immigration advocacy groups fear would be used to go after the relatives of the young immigrants. "Bipartisan negotiations continue in good faith among senators who understand what is at stake, and I will continue my efforts to reach a bipartisan agreement".

At Camp David, Trump convened his cabinet and Republican leaders to discuss, among a laundry list of legislative priorities, immigration.

"Where I don't understand the pushback is, in 2013 if everybody was for the 700 miles of double fencing, but now they're not for it because Trump calls it a wall - to me that does not make sense", said Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, the labor union for the Border Patrol agents. His priorities include tightening a family-based immigration policy that allows naturalized citizens and certain immigrants to petition for relatives to come to the U.S. and eliminating the Diversity Visa Lottery, a state department program that helps citizens of countries with historically low rates of immigration to come to the US.
