NBC names Hoda Kotb as Lauer replacement on 'Today'

  • Hoda Kotb is named the new co-anchor of the Today Show on NBC

Hoda Kotb will join Savannah Guthrie as a co-anchor of NBC's "Today" show.

NBC revealed Kotb will take over as Savannah Guthrie's co-host on the weekday program in an announcement Tuesday - a little over a month after Lauer was sacked by the network following an accusation of inappropriate sexual behavior.

"I am pinching myself", she said. Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts blazed that path for ABC's Good Morning America in the 2000s, but morning shows have traditionally paired a man and a woman as host.

In addition, she apparently has "quickly hit the ground running", according to NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack in a statement.

During Tuesday's early morning broadcast, Guthrie once again expressed her enthusiasm for working with Kotb. She has also co-hosted the 10 a.m.

Kotb, 53, will serve as co-anchor during the first two hours of the show, beginning at 7 a.m., and continue to appear on the fourth hour alongside Kathy Lee Gifford.

They are the first all-woman pair to anchor the NBC news program.

Kotb, in turn, joked that "we should send some medics to Alexandria, Virginia, where my mom has likely fainted after hearing the opening of that show".

"They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of TODAY", the email said, adding that Kotb was "remarkable".

Kotb was a news anchor and reporter for New Orleans' WWL TV from 1992 to 1998 before joining NBC News as a correspondent for "Dateline".

Kotb was assigned to host with Guthrie on the morning that Lauer's firing was announced. She has been one of the show's most valued employees, getting promoted to third co-anchor in March of 2017, making her an obvious choice when NBC News needed an immediate fill-in after Matt Lauer got fired.

Ben Bogardus, a journalism professor at Connecticut's Quinnipiac College, said Kotb's selection was a good one "because it reinforces the sense of a family coming together after a shared trauma".
