Apple's $29 iPhone Battery Replacement Doesn't Require a Device Check

Apple is replacing the batteries now, instead of waiting for the original end of the month start date.

The firm promised to replace the batteries of iPhone 6 and later handsets for $29 instead of the usual out-of-warranty price of $79. As part of that apology, Apple will make it easier to tell if your battery is slowing down your phone - and cheaper to replace the battery if it's causing problems.

Batteries typically decline in power output over time, reducing the amount of power they are able to provide to the device.

In mid-December, Apple was forced to confirm what many had suspected: it was deliberately hamstringing the performance of older iPhones running newer versions of iOS. Supplies may be limited at first.

Though the company hasn't updated the relevant support page to reflect this information as of writing, MacRumors has confirmed that Apple will agree to replace an iPhone's battery for $29 regardless of whether or not it passes the the company's diagnostic test, marking yet another concession towards their customers.

Apple is also working on iOS updates with iOS 11.2.5 in beta testing, Forbes reported. Specifically, it says an iPhone doesn't need to fail a diagnostics test before qualifying for the low cost battery replacement.

Many users could have smartphones operating at below 80% capacity, as the iPhone 6 debuted in September 2014, while the iPhone 6S arrived a year later.

Ben Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies, said Apple found itself in a tough spot by having to explain what it did to cope with the reality that all lithium ion batteries degrade over time. The iPhone 7 hit in September 2016. There's one caveat to this deal, however: Apple only committed to these $29 battery replacements during 2018, after which the cost could go up again. On the one hand, this wasn't an irresponsible fix, but not telling people was a big mistake. The institutional investor owned 10,888,403 shares of the iPhone maker's stock after purchasing an additional 329,794 shares during the quarter.

In all, iPhone models are eligible for the replacement program as of now. Soon Apple faced a lot of criticism from several users all around the world and had multiple lawsuits filed against them.
