The Afghan Ambassador to the U.S. Hamdullah Mohib welcomed Trump's tweet. "They give safe havens to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help".

In his first tweet of the new year, Trump had said the United States had "foolishly" given Pakistan $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years, "and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools".

Earlier talking to a Private News Channel, the Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif also lamented the U.S. president's remarks about Pakistan, and said that the United States is shifting its frustration towards Pakistan after its failure in Afghanistan.

The uneasy relationship between the United States and Pakistan has been on a downward spiral since the 2011 USA operation that located and killed Osama bin Laden in the military garrison town of Abbottabad.

After the tweet, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said: "We will respond to President Trump's tweet shortly".

The United States president's "tantrum trumped", said The Nation. Pakistan has been one of the largest recipients.

The group is accused of some of the most lethal attacks on USA forces in Afghanistan, and was dubbed by America's former top military officer Mike Mullen as a "veritable arm" of Pakistani intelligence.

However the Pakistani military launched an operation there in 2014, and now insists it has eradicated all safe havens in the country. However, the report said, the tweet was not out of the blue, as it was only the "latest lowlight in the tailspin that the US-Pakistan relationship has been caught in since August". "No more!" he said.

This comes after the U.S. administration was considering whether to withhold $255 million in aid to Pakistan as it feels Islamabad was not doing enough to counter terrorism. "No more!" he added.

He also noted that the assumption in Pakistan is that India is fuelling Trump's hostility towards Islamabad.

Washington has signalled to Pakistan that it would cut aid and enact other punitive measures if Islamabad did not stop helping or turning a blind eye to the Haqqani network militants who carry out cross-border attacks in Afghanistan.

Last month, during a visit to Afghanistan, Vice President Mike Pence had issued a warning to the country, saying Trump had "put Pakistan on notice" that it has provided a "safe haven" for terrorist groups.
