  • Delhi remained under dense fog as cold wave continued

Over 500 flights were delayed and more than 20 cancelled as dense fog severely hampered visibility at the Indira Gandhi International airport on Monday.

Dozens of trains were also cancelled, with passengers left in the cold at New Delhi's railway station as temperatures dropped to 8 degrees Celsius. About 265 domestic flights and 67 global flights were delayed. A large number of flights and trains were delayed. At least 15 trains were cancelled while 56 trains were running late and 20 have been rescheduled due to fog in several parts of northern India. The maximum was likely to hover around 21 degrees. Among the 300 hundred delayed, 265 were domestic flights and the rest global. While planes could land in Delhi, they were delayed because of unavailability of parking bays, occupied by aircraft waiting to take off, the official said.

"The sky will remain clear during the day, with dense fog in the morning", an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

In neighbouring Rajasthan, at least four people were killed and four injured when their auto fell into a pond due to low visibility caused by fog in Bharatpur's Dig. "Day temperature will fall significantly", Mahesh Palawat, Vice President at Skymet Weather, said, adding the minimum temperature of 5.7 degrees was "lowest minimum of the season".

On January 1, 2018, the air pollution in the national capital stood on the brink of emergency level adding to the worsening fog condition. Flights can land in visibility below 50 metres if pilots are trained in CAT IIIB - which is Category Three.
