  • Packers enter off-season by reportedly firing Capers

The longtime NFL coach was sacked by head coach Mike McCarthy following Sunday's season-ending 35-11 loss at Detroit, a league source confirmed Monday afternoon.

Whoever takes over as general manager will have to make a decision on what to do with head coach Mike McCarthy, who is entering the final year of his contract.

Green Bay's 2018 Regular Season opponents have also been locked in.

It's just the third time in McCarthy's 12 years as head coach he has fired a coordinator.

NFL Network first reported Monday night that Thompson would no longer continue in the role he assumed in 2005 after then-Packers GM/coach Mike Sherman was stripped of his GM duties. The Packers have finished outside the top 15 in the defensive rankings six of the past seven years. He ran the Carolina Panthers' defense from 2003 to "08". The only other coordinator McCarthy has fired was special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum after the 2014 season. It's the team's first losing season since 2008. I think if you talk with any of the players, one thing I've always believed in (has been) always focusing on the things you have control over.

Capers had been the defensive coordinator with the Packers since 2009, helping the team win a Super Bowl during the 2010 season.

Demovsky reports that Capers was sacked Sunday after the Packers' 35-11 loss to the Detroit Lions. They allowed 24.0 points per game.

It's not known whether Capers, 67, will retire from coaching. Capers' nine-season stay with the Packers was the longest of his 32-year National Football League coaching career, which has included two head-coaching jobs with the expansion Carolina Panthers (1995-'98) and Houston Texans (2002-'05). Green Bay and Washington finished tied for the 13 pick based on record, however a tie-breaker gave the Redskins the 13 selection.
